Illinois is low and gently rolling: its mean elevation is about 600 feet (183 m), and the whole state spans less than 1,000 feet of relief. Charles Mound near the Wisconsin line is the highest point at 1,235 feet (376 m), and the lowest is where the Mississippi River meets the Ohio at the southern tip, at 279 feet (85 m). Glaciers flattened most of the state, but the unglaciated far northwest and the Shawnee Hills in the south are more rugged.

In the Contours preview, the lines follow the river bluffs: the Mississippi along the western border, the Illinois River running diagonally through the center, and the Ohio at the bottom. The flattest prairie between them carries only a few widely spaced lines, and the Shawnee Hills knot up near the southern tip.

The preview is the Contours export for Illinois with the shale palette on a dark background, at 18 × 24 inches. In the creator a smaller contour interval adds detail to the prairie; you can also change the colors and title or switch to Strata, Ridgeline or a 3D terrain model.

Questions about the Illinois artwork

Can I make a map of Chicago instead of the whole state?
Yes. Chicago is nearly flat at state scale. Search Chicago in the creator for a terrain poster, or open the Chicago place page for a City poster of the Loop's streets and buildings.
Can I make a 3D-printable model of the whole state?
Yes. Switch the product to 3D Terrain Model in the creator to preview the state as a relief model and download STL, 3MF or GLB. Choose a model size that fits your printer and check the slicer preview before printing.
How much does it cost?
Downloads are pay what you want, including free. You can add a contribution at checkout if the artwork or model is worth it to you. No account is needed.
Do you ship a printed poster or a 3D print?
No. Printed Canyon delivers digital files only: PNG, PDF and SVG for posters, and STL, 3MF and GLB for terrain models. You print them at home or through a print shop or 3D-printing service of your choice.
