Virginia's geological survey describes five physiographic provinces. The Appalachian Plateau just brushes the far southwest, the Valley and Ridge runs along the western border, and the narrow Blue Ridge sits against it. East of the mountains, the Piedmont, the largest province, stretches across central Virginia, and the Coastal Plain slopes gently toward the coastline.
Mount Rogers, on the Grayson–Smyth county line in southwestern Virginia, is the highest point at 5,729 feet (1,746 m), and the lowest is sea level on the Atlantic. In the Ridgeline preview, the western provinces rise as tightly packed crests, the lines ease across the Piedmont, and they flatten into long, even strokes on the Coastal Plain, with the Eastern Shore as broken lines across the bay.
