North Carolina crosses three physiographic provinces: the Blue Ridge in the west, the rolling hills of the Piedmont, and the Coastal Plain toward the Atlantic. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the Blue Ridge has the highest topography east of the Mississippi River, with elevations from about 1,000 feet to more than 6,600 feet.
Mount Mitchell, in the Black Mountains of Yancey County, is the highest point east of the Mississippi River at 6,684 feet (2,037 m).
