Ohio's landscape splits roughly where the ice sheets stopped. The Ohio Division of Geological Survey maps much of the west as till plains and the northwest as the Maumee Lake Plains, a flat former lake basin that once held the Black Swamp. The unglaciated Allegheny Plateau in the southeast is a dissected plateau of rugged hills, and its Shawnee-Mississippian Plateau is described as the most rugged area in Ohio.
Campbell Hill in Logan County is the highest point at 1,550 feet (472 m), and the Ohio River is the lowest at 455 feet (139 m), so relief is subtle.
