South Carolina steps down from its northwest corner to the Atlantic. A small piece of the Blue Ridge Mountains sits along the North Carolina line, and the Piedmont covers the rest of the Upstate. The Fall Line, marked by the Sandhills, separates it from the Coastal Plain, which covers about two thirds of the state and ends in the barrier islands and marshes of the Lowcountry.
Sassafras Mountain in Pickens County is the highest point at 3,554 feet (1,083 m), and the Atlantic Ocean is the lowest, at sea level.
