The Atacama Desert in northern Chile is one of the driest places on Earth outside the poles, and its high, clear skies draw some of the world's major observatories. ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, observes from the Chajnantor plateau at about 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), east of the oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama.
The map area, about 72 by 66 kilometers, centers the chart on San Pedro de Atacama and the volcanoes along the Bolivian border. The Celestial preview charts the sky at midnight local time on July 14, 2026, close to the new moon, with Scorpius and Sagittarius, toward the center of the Milky Way, high overhead.
In the creator you can change the date and time, show or hide constellation lines, labels, planets and the Moon, and set the colors and title. Choose 3D Terrain Model instead to download the map area's volcanoes as a printable STL or 3MF; the download credits the elevation source used.

Questions about the Atacama Desert artwork
- Which night does the Atacama star map show?
- Midnight local time on July 14, 2026, close to the new moon, so no moonlight washes out the sky. Pick any date and time in the creator, such as a night you spent under these skies, and the chart redraws the stars, planets and Moon for that moment.
- How much does it cost?
- Downloads are pay what you want, including free. You can add a contribution at checkout if the artwork or model is worth it to you. No account is needed.
- Do you ship a printed poster or a 3D print?
- No. Printed Canyon delivers digital files only: PNG, PDF and SVG for posters, and STL, 3MF and GLB for terrain models. You print them at home or through a print shop or 3D-printing service of your choice.
