The Matterhorn, Monte Cervino in Italian, rises to 4,478 meters (14,692 feet) on the border between Switzerland and Italy. Its four faces point toward the compass directions: the north face overlooks Zermatt and the south face towers over Breuil-Cervinia. Edward Whymper's party made the first ascent on July 14, 1865, by the Hörnli ridge, and an Italian rope team led by Jean-Antoine Carrel reached the summit from the Italian side a few days later.
The curated map area is small, about 5 by 5 kilometers around the summit, so the peak fills the frame. At that scale the default Strata camera flattens the horn, so this preview lowers the camera altitude to 35°, raises the vertical exaggeration to 160 and pans the frame north. Seen from the south, the pyramid rises in pale shale bands above the lower terrain around it.
