According to Pennsylvania's geological survey, three physiographic provinces make up more than 98% of the state: the Appalachian Plateaus in the north and west, the Ridge and Valley through the center, and the Piedmont in the southeast. The Allegheny Front escarpment separates the plateaus from the long, narrow ridges and valleys that curve across the middle of the state.

Mount Davis in Somerset County is the highest point at 3,213 feet (979 m), and the Delaware River is the lowest, at sea level.
